Improve grades and learn how to teach kids anything by connecting students prior knowledge and connecting it with prior experiences. For this article, we will use the topic of diet and exercise as an example. The objective of this lesson is for students to identify the parts of a nutritious diet and describe how exercise is beneficial to the body. Sure, this is a rudimentary topic, but it is effective with all topics no matter how advanced.
Phase one of how to teach kids using the Mastery Model: Prepare the student for the information to be presented.
1) Hook Em': Setup a table of healthy foods and ride a bicycle into the room. Ask the student to think about a time when they rode a bike uphill or downhill and how it effected their breathing. Ask them what it would feel like to ride a bike uphill, after eating 10 candy bars versus an hour after eating a turkey sandwich. This interpersonal hook will grasp their attention and help them connect with previous experiences.
2) The Kindling: To build on the hook, ask the following questions: What makes a bike move? Why do we eat food? Are there special mechanisms in our body that convert food into energy to ride a bike? Give the students time, and allow them to make a list of their ideas on paper.
3) The Bridge: To connect the hook and kindling, explain that the student will be learning about the food pyramid and why it is important to have certain foods in specific proportions for our bodies to function properly. Likewise explain that the child will learn exercises to keep our bodies healthy in FUTURE lessons. It is important to prepare them for additional learning that will occur after this lesson.
Phase Two of how to teach kids anything: Use a visual organizer.
Create an unmarked diagram of foods and a list of words to identify them. Protein, carbohydrates, fat, etc.
Phase Three of how to teach kids anything: The kids will collect the information to complete the visual organizer.
Verbally present the information about the ingredients of the various foods to the students using the visual organizer and the actual food. Explain each part identifying its name and function. Discuss how each part works to make a healthy meal. The students will complete the visual organizer as each item is discussed, starting at one end of the table and working your way down.
Phase Four of how to teach kids anything: Ask review questions.
1) Mastery Questions: What are the components of a nutritious meal? How do these foods help our bodies create energy for exercise?
2) Understanding Questions: In regards to health, compare and contrast healthy and unhealthy foods. How are they similar? How are they different?
3) Self-Expressive Questions: What would a days worth of healthy food look like. Create a nutritious meal with all the food groups. Draw your creation.
4) Interpersonal Questions: What features will you and your family look for when you go grocery shopping next? What are your favorite healthy foods?
The keys for how to teach kids any subject are connecting, organizing, developing images and elaborating. Connect the content presented with the students prior experiences. Use a visual organizer to organize the lesson and make the subject matter clear. Lastly, the students can elaborate on the content presented by answering the questions that are asked for review. Additionally to elaborate and extend the lesson, continue with a unit that builds on what was taught.
